While living in Ghana, I was teaching HIV/AIDS awareness to junior high students, and also helped start a music class with my drum teacher and mentor, Odartey Kwashi. I found that using the local drum language and simple Ewe words, I could bring even the youngest children from the village together to drum and dance! This was truly a highlight in Ghana, and a memory I can never forget. To see people with so little be so happy, and we have so much "stuff" and can be so unhappy...this paradox forever changed my life, and sparked my inspiration to practice music therapy and education all over the world!
